Add Summertime To Your Netflix Queue
Words by Kristal Trotter
Then add the show’s amazing soundtrack to your Spotify playlist, which perfectly mixes the old with the new. A nod to the show’s main character, Summer and to this young generation of Italians.
If you’ve liked Never Have I Ever, The Half of It and of course, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, then you might want to add Summertime to your Netflix queue. This young adult love story is set in Cesenatico on the Adriatic coast of Italy, during a time of the year Italians look forward to the most – summer break. The story focuses on the relationship between Summer (Rebecca Coco Edogamhe) and Alessandro (Ludovico Tersigni), two young people who fall in love at first sight at a pool party right in the beginning of the summer. Throughout their rocky beginning as a couple, we get to know Summer’s best friends Sofia (Amanda Campana) and Edo (Giovanni Maini), her sister Blue (Alice Ann Edogamhe) and her mother Isabella (Thony). A surprising storyline is the friendship between Sofia and Alessandro’s best friend Dario (Andrea Lattanzi), who meet at the pool party for the first time and connect over music.
There has been a lot of praise for the show’s soundtrack and for its cinematography, with its beautiful coastal scenes and vibrant colors; less so for the plot, which doesn’t get any more complicated then what was already mentioned. The series is loosely based off of Federico Moccia’s YA novel Tre Metri Sopra Il Cielo (Three Steps Over Heaven) and you can find some similarities in Luca Lucini’s 2004 screen adaptation, which brought thousands of teenage girls to fall in love with a young Riccardo Scamarcio (John Wick, The Ruthless).
If you want to know what it’s like for the majority of the Italian youth during summer break, this is pretty much it! Isn’t love-turn-summer-fling all teenagers are looking for anyway?
