Culture/Media – Donald Glover premiers a short film called Polenta

[ENG]: Donald Glover and Adidas Originals launch five short films to promote classic Adidas footwear styles re-imagined by the artist and one of those short films got me thinking.
[ITA]: Donald Glover e Adidas Originals lanciano cinque corti per promuovere modelli di scarpe classiche dell’Adidas riproposte dall’artista e uno di quei corti mi ha fatto pensare.
‘Donald Glover Presents’ is the footwear collaboration between the multi-talented artist Donald Glover and sportswear brand Adidas. Storytelling is at the heart of five short films that were released Thursday, which focus on the value of the experiences you have from what you wear rather than the value of the apparel itself. While the re-imagined styles of Adidas shoes promoted are ‘Donald Glover type’ cool (the Nizza, the Continental 80 and the Lacombe), I’m not here to talk about the sneakers.
The five short films premiered are called Timber, 1985, Avocado, Dusty and (the one that caught my eye) Polenta.
In the short film ‘Polenta’ starring Glover and actress/comedian Mo’Nique, the scene takes place in the kitchen of what seems to be an upper class Hollywood event as Mo’Nique complains about the “bougie food at these fancy things.”; she talks about needing “real food” like grits while looking at Japanese polenta with disappointment.
In this parallel universe that is Glover’s mind, the comparison of these two foods sparked a connection in mine – polenta and grits seem worlds apart, but the experience of eating these simple and humble ingredients is exactly the same.
Polenta is an Italian dish and staple of northern Italian cuisine, while grits are a traditional dish and staple of the American South; they are both made from ground corn (one coming from yellow corn while the other from white corn) and are one of the best kinds of comfort food you can ever have.
In Donald Glover’s statement, he says that “Rich is a concept” and I couldn’t agree more, because these are dishes born out of poverty, slow food that requires standing at a stove and a long time stirring. Family. Work. Nonetheless it’s an experience that is truly rich because it’s important, comforting, just like Mo’Nique and her grits.
Like I said, the sneakers are cool. I still don’t know what Japanese polenta is.

“Rich is a concept. With this project, I wanted to encourage people to think about how their stories can be told on their feet. Value isn’t quantified by what you wear, rather the experiences from them. And you make the decision on what works for you, you live through your own lens. The partnership for me is about being able to exemplify what doing your own thing truly looks and feels like.”

La narrativa é al cuore dei cinque cortometraggi che sono stati rilasciati giovedì e che si focalizzano sul valore delle esperienze dell’individuo data dai capi che indossa, piuttosto che sul valore dell’abbigliamento stesso. Mentre gli stili di scarpe Adidas riproposti e pubblicizzati sono stilosi ‘alla Donald Glover’ (la Nizza, la Continental 80 e la Lacombe), non sono qui per parlarvi di sneaker.
I cinque corti in anteprima s’intitolano Timber, 1985, Avocado, Dusty e (quello che mi ha catturato l’attenzione) Polenta.
Nel corto ‘Polenta’ che vede protagonisti Glover e l’attrice/comica Mo’Nique, la scena si svolge in una cucina che sembrerebbe di un evento di Hollywood altolocato, mentre Mo’Nique si lamenta del cibo ‘bougie’ tipico di questi eventi di lusso; parla del bisogno di “cibo vero” come i grits quando guarda la polenta giapponese con delusione.
In questo universo parallelo che é la mente di Glover, il paragone di questi due cibi ha innescato un collegamento nella mia – polenta e grits sembrano provenire da mondi lontani, ma l’esperienza di mangiare questi semplici ed umili ingredienti é esattamente la stessa cosa.
Polenta é un piatto italiano fondamentale dell’Italia settentrionale, mentre i grits sono un piatto tradizionale importante del sud degli Stati Uniti; sono entrambi fatti dalla farina di mais (uno deriva dal mais giallo, mentre l’altro dal mais bianco) e sono i migliori tipi di cibo di conforto che puoi avere.
Nella dichiarazione di Donald Glover, lui dice che “La ricchezza é un concetto” e io non potrei essere più d’accordo, perché questi sono piatti nati dalla povertà, cibo lento che richiede stare in piedi davanti al fornello e tanto tempo a mescolare. Famiglia. Lavoro. Nonostante ciò, é un’esperienza che é veramente ricca perché é importante, confortevole, come Mo’Nique ed i suoi grits.
Come ho accennato prima, gli sneaker sono stilosi. Continuo a non sapere cosa sia la polenta giapponese.

“La ricchezza é un concetto. Con questo progetto, volevo incoraggiare le persone a pensare a come le storie possano essere raccontate sui piedi. Il valore non é quantificato da cosa indossi, piuttosto é quantificato dalle esperienze portate da esse. E tu decidi cosa funziona per te, tu vivi attraverso le tue lenti. La collaborazione per me significa essere in grado di esemplificare la sensazione e la visione di cosa significhi fare a modo tuo.”
